What is the CityCenter?

The CityCenter is a massive, urban, mixed-use complex located on 76 acres in the heart of the illustrious Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. It is, in fact, the largest privately funded construction project in the United States. It is also the highest LEED achievement for any hotel, retail, or residential development in Las Vegas. It's doors opened in December of 2009, and was happy to achieve some of the highest honors around in terms of sustainability, green building initiatives, and LEED cerftification.

CityCenter achieves Gold LEED certification via Sustainable Construction and Recycling

  • To make way for the CityCenter project, the Boardwalk Hotel was detonated and brought down. CityCenter scored LEED points because 80% of the previous structure was recycled into the building materials, though some of this material was shipped to other countries for reuse after being wrapped in Boardwalk curtains and carpets as recycled packing materials.
  • Thanks to companies such as Evergreen Recycling, which provided construction waste services and roll-off containers, 95% of all construction waste that would have ended up in landfills has been recycled.
  • Only wood which was taken from forests with responsible management was used.
  • Reclaimed water from the Monte Carlo Hotel was used for dust control, instead of precious, potable drinking water.
  • Concrete was manufactured and processed on-site, saving on energy costs.
  • Restaurants will focus on only using food that comes directly from responsible local growers.
  • All CityCenter facilities have well-integrated recycling programs moving forward.
  • Water conservation programs which save 30% to 40% of water inside buildings and 60% of outdoor water use.

Design Aspects contributing to Gold LEED certification

  • 8.5 megawatt natural gas co-generation plant that provides efficient electricity onsite, which has the effect of reducing emissions. The excess heat that is generated in the process is used to heat the water at the CityCenter, including the numerous pools.
  • Energy-efficient exterior facilitates heat transfer away from the building, reducing the need to cool the interior spaces in the hot desert summers Las Vegas is famous for.
  • Each slot-machine has an integrated AC unit which blows gently from below, instead of blowing AC-chilled air from above into empty space where nobody is, reducing energy wastage.
  • Water fixtures use 30% less water, yet provide amazingly gratifying hot showers.
  • Rooms that are not occupied will automatically shut down heating and cooling systems, televisions, lights and appliances. So if you forget to turn off the light, CityCenter remembers for you!
